Notes from the President

HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!

Wow – we’re already into 2009.  I remember when we were worried about what would happen to our computer systems when we hit Y2K – year 2000.  Well, we made it past that and somehow we will make it past all of the financial woes we seem to be facing.  I know that there is a lot of uncertainty plaguing our minds but rest assured, that MOAA is actively watching out for our active duty troops and retirees.

Money may not be the key to our future but it certainly does help!  One way to invest in your future is to contribute to the future of others, that is, to contribute to the education of others.  In addition to the local scholarship funds that we raise in December at our Dinner/Auction, we have another scholarship fund.  That is a special MOAA National scholarship that was set up by Fred Klopper years ago.  To raise funds for this scholarship, he offers his time-share to be used by the person who wins the raffle.  Each person interested in this offer buys a raffle “chance” (or several chances) and we have the drawing at our January meeting.  You do not have to be present to win; however, you do have to buy “chances” in order to have an opportunity to win.  Makes perfect sense to me.  We will be getting information out to you soon so that you know how to participate.  (Or come to the January meeting with your checkbook for a last opportunity to purchase a chance.) some of you might want to attend.

Our Future Programs – Bob Kaufman continues to “wow” us with the programs that he plans.  There is something for everyone in the springtime so we hope each and every one of you finds at least one event to attend.

And membership increases – Bob Norman is drawing in more people due in part to and partially as a result of the great campaign scheme that MOAA National has in conjunction with the chapters.  That is good news for all of us.

Again, Happy New Year.

AFCEA Career Fair – The Scott Chapter of the Armed Forces Communications-Electronics Association (AFCEA) is holding a Career Fair on January 15, 2009, at the Scott Club, from until .  If you are looking for a job, this is your chance to meet with a multitude of employers in the area.  You can find out what they do and drop off copies of your resume.  Although the caption is “communications-electronics,” they are often looking for program managers, acquisition specialists, logisticians, etc. – in other words, lots of different types of people.  So get on over there and see what is going on.  ~ ~ ~  In addition, our MOAA chapter is going to have a table at this fair, not to hire people but to recruit people into MOAA and to show employers how they can advertise jobs on the MOAA website.  (If you’d like to help out at the MOAA table, please call me.)

St. Louis Chapter – The Greater St. Louis Chapter of MOAA is having their January 2009 meeting on Saturday, January 17, at lunchtime.  Their guest speaker will be Col Lee Lange from MOAA National Chapters Division.  He should have some great insight as to what Congress is planning for this next administration.  As soon as I have details, I will e-mail those out to you as
